What’s Going on Behind the Walls?

During the past few weeks, Orlando Public Library visitors have been hearing the sounds of construction on our 2nd floor and many have excitedly asked, “What’s going on behind the walls now?”  This week we can offer a sneak peek of the construction area that will become the Dorothy Lumley Melrose Center for Technology, Innovation & Creativity.  This area is now a “hard hat area,” however; our Skanska representative gave us a behind the scenes look.  Here are some of the photos we took on the tour.  We are looking forward to eventually showcasing the “before” and “after” photos here on our blog.  Keep checking in with us for further construction updates.

If you are planning to visit the library this weekend, come to our Basic Electronics Using Snap Circuits interactive workshop at 2pm on Sunday and stay for our 3:30 pm Machines, Motion and Engineering using K’NEX interactive workshop.

What’s Going on Behind the Wall?

In this past week, staff have seen the starting changes “behind the wall” on the second floor.  The carpet was removed to prep the area for the new Center. Can you guess which floor the carpet was repurposed?

In the meanwhile we continue to build new and exciting curriculum. Most recently Adobe InDesign was introduced for those interested in Graphic Design. We are offering Adobe  InDesign Fundamentals classes on Monday, July 8 at 5pm and Thursday, July 18 at 10am.  Summer fun for kids and teens continues in July with our Camp Savvy and TechKrew Technology classes.

So join us.  It’s an exciting time to be at the Orlando Public Library!

First Nail Ceremony Highlights

It was an exciting day at the Orlando Public Library today as Mr. Melrose, along with family and close friends, came to visit us for the First Nail Ceremony.  Mr. Melrose, Mary Ann Hodel, Library Director and CEO, Ted Maines, President, Library Board of Trustees, and Skanska Orlando Senior Vice President, Matt Gilbert each hammered in the first nails to mark the beginning of construction of the new center.

Technology and Education Center staff spoke about curriculum planning for the center and presented a small sample of fun new classes currently being offered in key areas of graphic design, electronics, and 3D printing.
