First Nail Ceremony Highlights

It was an exciting day at the Orlando Public Library today as Mr. Melrose, along with family and close friends, came to visit us for the First Nail Ceremony.  Mr. Melrose, Mary Ann Hodel, Library Director and CEO, Ted Maines, President, Library Board of Trustees, and Skanska Orlando Senior Vice President, Matt Gilbert each hammered in the first nails to mark the beginning of construction of the new center.

Technology and Education Center staff spoke about curriculum planning for the center and presented a small sample of fun new classes currently being offered in key areas of graphic design, electronics, and 3D printing.

First Nail Ceremony

This past Saturday morning, visitors to the Orlando Public Library’s second floor Technology and Education Center were surprised to find evidence of construction that had happened overnight.  A new temporary wall has been installed in preparation for further construction on the second floor. The design stage is now almost complete and library staff members are looking forward to watching The Dorothy Lumley Melrose Center beginning to come to life. To mark the beginning of construction, we will have a First Nail Ceremony on Wednesday, June 12 at 10:30 am.  Join us for this event at the Orlando Public Library.

MakerBot Printer Visits Enthusiastic Crowds at the Florida Library Conference

Our MakerBot Replicator 2 3D printer made a guest appearance at the Florida Library Conference this week.  Technology and Education Center staff presented FABulous Centers:  Empowering Libraries to Get Innovative and Creative with Hi-Tech Technology and we used the 3D printer and our Snap Circuits and K’NEX kits to show hands-on examples of innovation and creativity in our STEM classes and workshops.  A packed room of over 60 conference participants enjoyed the event.  Most knew about 3D printing, but had never seen a 3D printer in action.  We have embedded our Prezi Conference Presentation below.
