What’s Going on Behind the Walls?

During the past few weeks, Orlando Public Library visitors have been hearing the sounds of construction on our 2nd floor and many have excitedly asked, “What’s going on behind the walls now?”  This week we can offer a sneak peek of the construction area that will become the Dorothy Lumley Melrose Center for Technology, Innovation & Creativity.  This area is now a “hard hat area,” however; our Skanska representative gave us a behind the scenes look.  Here are some of the photos we took on the tour.  We are looking forward to eventually showcasing the “before” and “after” photos here on our blog.  Keep checking in with us for further construction updates.

If you are planning to visit the library this weekend, come to our Basic Electronics Using Snap Circuits interactive workshop at 2pm on Sunday and stay for our 3:30 pm Machines, Motion and Engineering using K’NEX interactive workshop.

CubeX™ 3D Printer visits the Florida Blog and Social Media Conference

Library staff accompanied the CubeX™ 3D printer on its first public outing this past weekend.  We attended the Florida Blog and Social Media Conference at Full Sail University to feature our CubeX™  3D Printer, which created lots of interest.  As the 3D printer captured passerby’s attention, we spoke with bloggers and social media attendees from around the state.  Many were excited to hear about the new Melrose Center, which includes a recording studio, film studio, photography studio, Fab Lab and simulation lab.  We  spoke about library technology classes including 3D design, K’NEX™ engineering, electronics and the Adobe® Master Collection® CS6 .  We also had a sneak peek through a pair of Google Glasses from one of the bloggers in attendance.

If you are interested in exploring the world of 3D design, join us on Friday, September 27 at 10 am for 3D Design and Printing Level 1 and at 11.30 am for 3D Design and Printing Level 2 classes.  We are in the initial stages of developing our 3D printing services and would love to know what you would like to print on a 3D printer.

Continue to watch the blog for further updates on the Melrose Center.

Orlando Public Library Visits Orlando Tech

OCPS Orlando Tech Film Studio
OCPS Orlando Tech Film Studio

The Technology and Education Center staff is always on the lookout for ways to get the word out about our wonderful library services.  We sometimes consider ourselves a “hidden gem” here in downtown Orlando.  This week, we visited another “ hidden gem” in our neighborhood, OCPS Orlando Tech.    We toured the Digital Media Center and viewed beautiful student artwork created in Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop.  We saw examples of 3D models designed by students and build on their 3D printers.   In the film department, we toured the motion capture studio and observed a class in Adobe Premiere Pro.  We watched a team of students in the audio department plan a recording session and set up the studio space.  When the Melrose Center opens, we are excited about the opportunities for partnership between the Orlando Public Library and OCPS Orlando Tech.

Watch this blog for continued updates on the Melrose Center construction progress.  We’re looking forward to giving you further information about our planned Film Studio, Photography Studio, Recording Studio, Fab Lab and Simulation Lab.
