Promoting STEM Education to Stimulate Minds

Science, Technology, Engineering and Math subjects (STEM) have become a frequent discussion topic in education and in the media. According to Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce, the U.S. will only be able to fill about 50% of the projected 1.5 million new STEM jobs that will be created over the next decade. School systems, museums and libraries throughout the US are looking at ways to promote STEM learning. As part of our new technology center, we are also looking into ways to stimulate, engage and educate students with fun, interactive activities while promoting the importance of STEM education.

Looking into Tech Talks

The third annual TEDx Orlando was a sold out event last Saturday afternoon at the Garden Theater in Winter Garden.  TED stands for Technology, Entertainment and Design and participants were energized and inspired by a mixture of local and national speakers, interspersed with some of the best filmed TED Talks from 2012. Attendees also had the opportunity to participate in the Before I Die live interactive art project. The center would be a great place for Tech Talk meet ups.  What types of groups do you think would benefit from our center?

Keep checking back with the Dorothy Lumley Melrose Center blog for information about our future events in technology, music, film and maker projects.
