DIY-ers are becoming more and more inspired by the multiple sources now available for personalized learning. You’ve probably heard of education Web offerings such as CourseraKhan Academy and iTunesU.  Code Academy, a free interactive site that teaches coding, recently announced they are working with companies like NPR, YouTube and Bitly .  At OCLS, we will be offering open study labs to access these free educational sites starting in February.  If you’re interested in learning coding in a classroom setting, DLM-TIC is planning basic coding classes.  Stay tuned to this blog for further details.

The Replicator 2 has Arrived!

This week, library staff members were excited to unpack and set the MakerBot Replicator 2 3D printer to work.  Made in Brooklyn, NY, the Replicator 2 prints 3D objects designed in CAD software.  It has a build volume of 410 cubic inches and completes 3D objects by layering PLA filament at temperatures of up to 240◦C.  Staff members made this awesome bracelet in just 12 minutes.  You can also download and build items from the Thingiverse website, or design your very own!

So, what will you design on our 3D printer?  Watch this space for 3D designing and printing workshops—coming soon–at the Orlando Public Library.
