The Exemplary Learning Design Award

The Technology and Education Center (TEC) at the Orlando Public Library is celebrating its newest award presented at the Florida Library Association Conference.  The Exemplary Learning Design Award was presented to honor the Library’s  community achievement in Employment Preparation for Job Seekers.  In partnership with Workforce Central Florida, library staff created a comprehensive curriculum, including Resume Writing and Job Interviewing Skills.  The TEC looks forward  to continuing development of new and exciting technology workshops in preparation for the DLM-TIC. MakerBot Printer Visits Enthusiastic Crowds at the Florida Library Conference

Our MakerBot Replicator 2 3D printer made a guest appearance at the Florida Library Conference this week.  Technology and Education Center staff presented FABulous Centers:  Empowering Libraries to Get Innovative and Creative with Hi-Tech Technology and we used the 3D printer and our Snap Circuits and K’NEX kits to show hands-on examples of innovation and creativity in our STEM classes and workshops.  A packed room of over 60 conference participants enjoyed the event.  Most knew about 3D printing, but had never seen a 3D printer in action.  We have embedded our Prezi Conference Presentation below.

Golden Brick Award

On Thursday, April 18, the Orange County Library System was honored with a 2012 Golden Brick Award from the Downtown Orlando Partnership for the Kendrick Melrose Major Gift Announcement in the development of the Dorothy Lumley Melrose Center for Technology, Innovation & Creativity. The announcement unveiled the single largest gift in the library’s history which will make way for a high-tech center at the downtown library. The awards are given to projects which positively impact the Downtown Development District. The Golden Brick Awards recognize outstanding contributions to downtown that demonstrate excellence and achievement. For over two decades, these awards have been distributed for projects which positively impact the Downtown Development District. The DLM-TIC is currently in development with an anticipated opening date of early Spring 2014.

Don’t you love the convenience of mobile apps?  Have you ever wished that you could find a reliable source for the best apps around?  The Library is now offering a one-hour class featuring the Best Mobile Apps for Business and Best Mobile Apps for Education.  Join us on Saturday, April 27 at 10am at the Orlando Public Library located downtown Orlando to learn everything you need to know about the Best Mobile Apps for Business or at 11:30am for an in-depth look at the Best Mobile Apps for Education.

Adobe Illustrator in Art and Design

As we continue to watch educational developments in STEM, we’re planning new curriculum content to share with our community.  Last week we gave you a sneak peak at the Introduction to Engineering using K’NEX® curriculum, currently in the design phase.  This week, we would like to announce Adobe Illustrator.  This two-hour class will cover all the essential tools as participants learn to design their own logo and business card.  So whether you are an artist intrigued by designing in a digital art space or a small business owner who needs a striking logo, join us for this class, coming in June to the Orlando Public Library.
