Melrose Center Team

Are you ready for the holidays?

At the Orlando Public Library we can say, “We are!” Or at least, we will be after attending this Saturday’s class, Design and Print Your Own Customer Cookie Cutters. It is wonderful to bake cookies for family and friends, but imagine the awesomeness of baking cookies using the cookie cutter you designed and printed. This class will have a drawing and the lucky winner can return to pick up their cookie cutter prototype printed by the library for free. So join us here at the Orlando Public Library on this Saturday, November 2 at 10 am and perhaps you will be the lucky winner!

STEM Webinar

STEM is an important topic for parents, schools and libraries.  Technology and Education Staff members were recently pleased to be asked to contribute to a live webinar to discuss the ways we teach and promote STEM education for kids and teens at the Orange County Library System.  We were proud to talk about our kids and teen classes, since we offer an extensive array of fun, interactive classes and workshops throughout the summer.   We will be participants in an additional live webinar on Monday, October 28, 2013.

Did you know that our STEM classes for kids and teens continue throughout the year?  This Saturday, October 26 at 10 am, we will hold a class for our Whiz Kids called Hack-a-tronics: 3D Printing.  Spaces are limited, so if you are interested, reserve a spot today!

Media Visits

Technology and Education staff members have recently been excited to host visits from local media interested in the progress of the Dorothy Lumley Melrose Center.  We were delighted to have journalists from the Orlando Sentinel visit and write an article about the Melrose Center and the Orlando Public Library in general.  A TV crew from the Orlando Telemundo Broadcasting Company got a firsthand look at the Center in its development stages and was given a run through of the Fab Lab technology behind the scenes.  Take a look at our “celebrity” staff members and newest board member Hernan Tagliani, as they publicize the Melrose Center and our anticipated opening.

And don’t forget to keep watching the blog for further details about the Melrose Center and technology classes at the Orlando Public Library.

What’s Going on Behind the Walls?

During the past few weeks, Orlando Public Library visitors have been hearing the sounds of construction on our 2nd floor and many have excitedly asked, “What’s going on behind the walls now?”  This week we can offer a sneak peek of the construction area that will become the Dorothy Lumley Melrose Center for Technology, Innovation & Creativity.  This area is now a “hard hat area,” however; our Skanska representative gave us a behind the scenes look.  Here are some of the photos we took on the tour.  We are looking forward to eventually showcasing the “before” and “after” photos here on our blog.  Keep checking in with us for further construction updates.

If you are planning to visit the library this weekend, come to our Basic Electronics Using Snap Circuits interactive workshop at 2pm on Sunday and stay for our 3:30 pm Machines, Motion and Engineering using K’NEX interactive workshop.
